Novice/Open Av Spaniel Test 26/04/26
Colquite Estate by kind permission of
Countess Pinky Le Grelle
Judges - Margaret Cox, Paul Bowyer and Sue Bailey
Wow what a great day, the weather was perfect, yes we were grateful to be in the beautiful blue bell woods out of the direct sun.
It was so nice to see some new faces along with the old ones 😉.
The hunt up for both the tests were held in the woods, with fresh ground for the open in the afternoon. Both hunt ups had a seen under each judge, the open ones being further in distance.
We then moved on to a left and right for the novice and a seen and blind in the open. To finish on we made use of the beautiful Camel river and had a seen retrieve in that, the Open competitors had a longer retrieve and they stood higher up the bank for their send and delivery.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank our judges not only did they judge but offered great help and advice to the competitors. Also thanks to Skinners for their continued support with prizes, all our helpers, competitors for supporting the club and lastly to the Countess Pinky le Grelle and Jim the keeper for the use of the wonderland ground.
Without everyone pulling together we couldn’t put these days on.

Jays Barton Farm, Okehampton BKPO Rob & Lorraine Willmott
Judges Margaret Cox (A3130), Tom Ballinger( NP), Ellie Boyles (NP) & Dave Kent (NP)
What a fun, enjoyable day. Had a good number of entries, 14 in the puppy and finishing with 16 in the Novice (sadly a few had to drop out last minute), lovely to see some new faces which is encouraging that there are more coming into the sport.
As always, the ground was lovely, rushes, white grass to hunt in and the large pond to finish on to cool the dogs down. The weather started off over cast but did warm up when the sun came out later so I’m sure the dogs were pleased to have a cool down.
A huge thanks must go to Rob and Lorraine for the wonderful ground and for Lorraine's home-made cooking for some tasty lunchtime food. To our friendly, knowledgeable, approachable judges, they really make the day by putting the competitors at ease but offering some great advice at the end of the runs.
To a wonderful team of helpers, again allowed the day to run smoothly by keeping every one moving. Lastly thanks for Skinners for their generous vouchers as prizes.
The Puppies went first in the morning, we had them running in pairs but so far apart they weren't aware they were, each had a seen with their judge, then they came out and went onto a seen with blind in the same place along a track with Ellie, once they did that they went back to the hunting area and were seen by the other judge. They then finished on the water with a seen.
The novices had a similar format but they run in pairs and hunted under both judges with a seen with each of them. Then went on to either the seen and blind or the seen on the water but jumping a jump before entering and then as exiting the water.
